Natural Nest Cavities Are Hard to Find!
About 58 species of birds use nest cavities in the state of Pennsylvania as their nesting sites. And each species has a different requirement for their nesting sites. Bluebirds like an open area to nest and forge for food and to find a natural cavity in such a habitat is difficult to find. And it’s largely caused by man needs to develop the land. Development is only one aspect of the problem. Severe nest competition between non – native birds and pesticides use has been difficult for the bluebirds. It is fair to say the problems the bluebirds have encountered over the years; mankind seems to be the adversary.
Even though the bluebird population has greatly decreased over the years, their future can still be promising for them. The most important step we can take to help bring back the bluebird is to provide nesting sites by setting out a bluebird box or starting a bluebird trail. A bluebird trail is a series of bluebird boxes placed along a prescribed route. In areas where nesting boxes have been put up in suitable habitat and monitored, bluebird populations are increasing. Today in this ever changing world the bluebirds depend highly on nest boxes for their nesting sites. Blue-birding is a great environmental hands-on project that people of all ages can enjoy. You too can be a part of their survival, by becoming a Landlord today.
